Interval Training is essential if you would like to train to run faster. There is lot of variety of interval training. In short, for instance, in a 400m running stadium, you run at a fast pace for one lap (400m), then rest for a while, then run a lap again. Run, say 10 laps in total. The running pace should be faster than your average running pace for distance running.
For example, if you are able to run at 5min/km. (That is 2min / 400m (1 lap)). In the interval training, you should run at about 1min 40 sec per lap, then rest for 1min 40 sec, then start the cycle again for next lap.
Interval training is very effective for building up pace. In the beginning, you can add one interval training per week. Later on, you can increase the training to two per week.
